More than 8,000 "American Idol" hopefuls auditioned for the hit talent show in Birmingham, Ala., on Monday, hoping to follow in the footsteps of two previous winners who hail from the southern city.
Would-be pop stars from states as far flung as Virginia, Michigan and California attempted to sway producers in brief auditions. Monday's try-out was part of a series of nationwide events.
Reigning champ Taylor Hicks comes from Birmingham, as does
Ruben Studdard, winner of the show's second season in 2003.

The smell of the vomit in tunnel 6 as it cooked in the valley heat was atrocious. And it was probably all for nothing.

Still, tens of thousands of "Idol" hopefuls show up each summer, some apparently battling worse nerves than others, all going for their shot at Justin Guarini-like stardom. (OK, bad example, but you get the point: Not even #2 is guaranteed a career from this.)

As the newest round of American Idol auditions have gotten underway, some former finalists have been dishing out advice to those who are auditioning. Overwhelmingly the advice seems to be "be yourself."
"Be yourself and pick songs that make you stand out," advises Carrie Underwood.
"Be yourself and sing like it's your last time singing," counsels Fantasia Barrino.
"Be you," suggests Paris Bennett. "And no theater songs. Boring."

About 10,000 "American Idol" hopefuls showed up at the Rose Bowl on Tuesday with wide-eyed dreams of becoming the next Taylor Hicks or Carrie Underwood.
After waiting all night and standing in line for hours, most contestants got less than a minute to sing a few bars — and then the boot.
Michael Taylor, 21, of El Monte, who works at a customer call service center, was among those quickly dismissed from the tryouts. Fox publicity representatives were more sensitive, saying he "was not moving forward."
