Clay Aiken is in line to be named to the President's Committee for People with Intellectual Disabilities, the White House said Wednesday.
Aiken, a Raleigh native who gained fame as a runner-up on "American Idol," once worked as a YMCA counselor.
The committee's Web site said it advises the president on issues pertaining to people with intellectual disabilities. The committee was established in 1961 by President John Kennedy as the President's Panel on Mental Retardation.

"American Idol" contestant Elliott Yamin almost missed U.S. President George Bush's White House meeting with the TV show's finalists, claiming he overslept.
"I had press to do this morning," Yamin said, the New York Post reported. "My sleep was interrupted, and I was trying to make up for it. The tour manager called me at the last minute (Friday) and said, 'We'll have a taxi to take you there for the photo.' And that's what I did."

Having had recently gotten over bronchitis and laryngitis, American Idol Runner-Up, Katherine McPhee is reportedly now healthy enough to make her appointment at the Oval Office to sing for President Bush.
Fittingly enough, it seems then that America's Second Choice will be singing to America's Other Second Choice.

After discussing war and peace in the Middle East, President Bush squeezed in a 10-minute photo-op Friday with finalists in the hit television show "American Idol."
They got the photos. Bush got a harmonica engraved with "American Idol 2006."
The 10 finalists dropped into the Oval Office to see Bush in between his meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair and another photo session with top high school students in the nation.

President Bush is about to come face-to-face with the one man who has his voting record beat.
Bush plans to host American Idol Taylor Hicks and the other Top 10 finalists next Friday in the Oval Office. It will be the first time contestants from the hit television show have been invited to meet the president.
